Best offline RPGs for a long commute

July 27, 2026 · Marta Kowalczyk

A good RPG on a commute is a small miracle, right up until the tunnel eats your connection and the game freezes on a menu. That is why we keep a separate list of RPGs that store everything locally and never ping a server mid-battle.

Ashfall Wardens is our current favourite for this. It downloads the whole story once, then leaves you alone. Turn-based combat is easy to pause between stops, and the generous autosave means a sudden station arrival never loses progress.

The trick with offline RPGs is checking the save behaviour before you commit. Play the first hour at home, switch to airplane mode, and see whether it still opens and saves. Plenty of games look offline-friendly but quietly sync in the background.

Our advice: pick one longer RPG for a trip rather than three shallow ones. You will get more out of a story that unfolds over many sessions, and you will not spend your battery reinstalling things on hotel wifi.
